The History to the ESF Film Awards
After a successful inaugural South Island School Film Awards event in 2008, suggested by three senior students (Sam Kindler, Adrian Chao & Simon Keung) the Film/Media Studies Curriculum Group decided to adopt this celebratory approach for all ESF schools. The initial objective was to enhance the visibility of filmmaking across the ESF primary and secondary schools by celebrating the quality of work currently produced. We hope that in turn, this encourages those schools not currently engaged in filmmaking to add units of enquiry offering students the opportunity to work within this exciting medium.
New Media
The ESF Film Awards is part of a wider push within ESF to recognise the importance of new media technologies within the lives of our students. With the ever growing significance of social networking sites and mobile phone technologies, film is no longer restricted to the specialist few. Students have opportunities to showcase their work on the internet with the possibility of authentic, immediate feedback from their peers and indeed, media professionals.
Editing
Students can now make film using their laptops (Many of our schools have already adopted a 1-1 connectivity approach) or mobile phones, seamlessly connecting their work to either Windows or Mac based operating systems. Increasingly, online editing applications are also available. Our primary school and Middle Years students are likely to be using Windows Movie Maker or i-movie but in reality, whatever editing software suits student and teacher needs is fine with us.
At secondary level and particularly from GCSE upwards (West Island offers GCSE Film and South island GCSE Media Studies) more sophisticated editing applications are offered; Final Cut Pro Studio offers a professional suite from which filmmakers can edit sound (Soundtrack Pro) whilst working on fancy titles and special effects. (Motion and Livetype) Adobe Premiere Pro is another popular application as are After Effects and Logic Pro (sound based work). Finally, Sony Vegas or the Casablanca system both offer other high quality finishes.

Entries for 2010 need to be uploaded onto the official ESF YouTube site no later than April the 30th. The Primary School submissions will then be judged by a team of five judges during the 3rd of May at South Island School:
